Passenger flow continues to decline at W-B/Scranton International Airport

PITTSTON TWP. — Passenger enplanements continue to drop at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.

For the month of August 2023, enplanements decreased 5.2% to 17,314, from 18,266 in August 2022. Seat availability also decreased 3.5%, to 20,560, from 21,308 a year ago.

In August 2023, two departing flights were cancelled, both for air traffic control/weather. That accounted for 226 (1.1%) out of a total of 20,764 departure seats. Also, four arriving flights were cancelled, all for ATC/weather.

Under personnel, the Airport Board appointed the following to Maintenance 2 positions:

• Kenneth Slusser, Pittston, effective Sept. 25.

• Brendan Tomeo, Wilkes-Barre, effective Sept. 25.

• Adam Kizer, Lake Ariel, effective upon confirmation of airport clearances.

• Michael Smith, Exeter, effective upon confirmation of airport clearances.

Eric McKitish, the airports Director of Marketing and Air Service Development, said the Airport Board approved the solicitation for a Request for Qualifications for Airport Security Services.

Also, Michael Kaminski, Pittston Township, was recognized for 15 years of service at AVP.

On the airport’s profit/loss statements, for the month of August 2023, airport operations had a profit totaling $102,972, compared to income of $112,697 in August 2022, which is a difference of $9,725.

Year to date, the report shows a loss of $400,838, as compared to a loss in 2022 of $326,846, a difference of $73,992.

Invoices received since the last meeting for supplies and services totaling $1,342,000.71 were presented on the attached sheets for review and were approved by the board.
