Reward offered in 2020 Hanover Township deadly shooting

HANOVER TWP. — Two shell casings from a 9mm and one shell casing from a .380 were found inside a Toyota Camry where Fernando Vasquez-Vittini were found lying outside covered in blood after a shooting on Boland Avenue on Aug. 9, 2020, according to a search warrant affidavit.

Vasquez-Vittini, 25, and another man, Jose Carlos Matos, were shot while sitting inside the Toyota parked in front of 226 Boland Ave., reportedly by one or two men who got into the rear seat.

After shots were fired, Matos ran away on foot as Vasquez-Vittini sped away, stopping at Saint Marys Road and South Main Street, where he got out of the Toyota and collapsed. Vasquez-Vittini was transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township where he died.

An autopsy by forensic pathologist Dr. Gary Ross said Vasquez-Vittini, who was from Scranton, died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Matos, who was found in the area of Lee Park Avenue and Saint Marys Raod, survived a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

No charges have been filed in the deadly shooting.

The Pennsylvania State Police Major Case Team at Troop P, Wilkes-Barre, say they are continuing the investigation as a $5,000 reward is being offered for information that results in an arrest.

Investigators suspect Vasquez-Vittini and Matos arrived in front of the Boland Avenue residence when two men, identified as one Black and the other dark skinned, entered the rear seat of the Toyota with shots being fired.

The two men in the rear seat fled the Toyota with one of them dropping a bag of cash he picked up, and sped away in a red Chevrolet Impala driven by a third unknown person.

Investigators later recovered the Chevrolet.

The search warrant affidavit says Matos reported to investigators after Vasquez-Vittini parked the Toyota in front of the house blocking traffic, a red, maroon or burgundy Chevrolet parked behind them.

A Black male and a Hispanic male exited the Chevrolet, entered the residence and removed a bag of clothes they placed in the Chevrolet. After the clothes were placed in the Chevrolet, the two men sat in the back seat of the Toyota where Matos, according to the search warrant affidavit, observed Vasquez-Vittini exchange a bag he passed to the rear seat and then heard gunshots.

A witness told investigators he heard gunshots and observed a black male with a handgun running in the street picking up cash blowing around before fleeing in the Chevrolet where it backed up and turned onto Vine Street, the affidavit says.

Anyone with information about the deadly shooting is asked to call the Pennsylvania State Police at Wilkes-Barre at 570-822-5400 or 1-800-472-8477.
