Monroe County sex offender charged by Kingston police in online child solicitation sting

KINGSTON — A convicted sex offender in Monroe County was charged by Kingston police on allegations he solicited who he believed was a 15-year-old girl for sexual relations, according to court records.

Stephen D. Whisenhunt, 39, of Kunkletown, was engaged in online conversations that were sexually oriented with a cooperating witness who pretended to be a teenage girl from May 31 to June 6, court records say.

As Whisenhunt was sending sexually graphic messages to the purported girl, he was sentenced in Monroe County Court on June 3 to eight-to-23 months in prison and two years of probation on charges of criminal attempt to commit statutory sexual assault and criminal attempt to commit corruption of minors.

It was not immediately known if Whisenhunt was given credit for time served by the Monroe County Court judge, allowing his immediate release on probation June 3.

Whisenhunt was required by the Monroe County judge to register his address for 15 years under the state’s Sexual Offender Registration and Notification Act.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Kingston police:

Police responded to a fast food restaurant’s parking lot on Wyoming Avenue on June 6 when Whisenhunt arrived, believing he was meeting a 15-year-old girl.

Instead, a cooperating witness confronted Whisenhunt in the parking lot and called police while supplying online chat messages.

During an interview with detectives, Whisenhunt admitted to sending sexually explicit messages and nude pictures of himself to the purported girl, the complaint says.

Whisenhunt was charged by Kingston police with three counts of unlawful contact with a minor and one count each of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault and criminal use of communication facility.

District Judge Alexandra Kokura Kravitz arraigned Whisenhunt and set bail at $50,000.

Whisenhunt is jailed at the Monroe County Prison.
